McDonald's wins on the early end, Wendy's and McDonald's tie on the cutoff, and McDonald's wins on coverage. Most McDonald's start breakfast at 5:00 AM when the restaurant opens; most Wendy's start at 6:30 AM, and only 22% open before that. Both chains stop breakfast at 10:30 AM at the typical store — the difference is that McDonald's extends to 11:00 AM at a large share of restaurants on weekends, while Wendy's extends only at 208 stores (5%), concentrated in Florida, Colorado and Illinois. Neither serves breakfast all day; McDonald's ended All Day Breakfast on March 25, 2020, and Wendy's has never offered it. In 2026 the biggest practical difference is whether the store serves breakfast at all: roughly 27% of US Wendy's don't, versus a small minority of McDonald's.

What time does McDonald's start serving breakfast compared to Wendy's?

McDonald's starts breakfast about 90 minutes earlier at the typical store: 5:00 AM against Wendy's 6:30 AM. McDonald's serves breakfast from the moment the restaurant opens, and most US McDonald's open at 5:00 AM (24-hour restaurants serve breakfast from 4:00–5:00 when the overnight menu switches). Wendy's also serves from opening, but Wendy's opens later: in September 2026, only 3.0% of breakfast-serving Wendy's open at 5:00 and 2.3% at 4:00, almost all 24-hour or interstate units. If you need breakfast before 6:00 AM, McDonald's is the safer bet in nearly every market; Wendy's before 6:00 exists mainly in Texas (28 of the 156 24-hour Wendy's), California, Minnesota and Ohio, and at airport and military-base stores.

The gap narrows in the late-start markets: about 10% of Wendy's open at 8:00 AM, mostly in the Northeast, Puerto Rico-style franchise groups and college towns, and those stores have a 2½-hour window McDonald's never has.

What time do Wendy's and McDonald's stop serving breakfast?

Both stop at 10:30 AM at the typical store; McDonald's is more likely to extend to 11:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Wendy's cutoff is one of the most uniform numbers in fast food: 96.9% of breakfast stores stop at 10:30 on weekdays and 95% on weekends. The 11:00 weekend exceptions are geographic — 80 Florida stores, 37 in Colorado, 30 in Illinois, 28 in California, 17 in Massachusetts — and five California stores plus Winter Park, Florida run to 11:00 every day. McDonald's does not publish a store census, but its FAQ language ("most restaurants stop serving breakfast at 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m.") and locator listings show 11:00 weekend cutoffs across a large share of markets, with the decision left to operators.

On the early side, Wendy's has 36 stores ending at 10:00 (airports, Fort Campbell, Camp Lejeune, Naval Base Kitsap) and 25 Cleveland-area and Florida stores ending at 10:25; McDonald's airport and travel-plaza units similarly end early. If you arrive at 10:35 on a Sunday, McDonald's is more likely to still have breakfast; at 10:20 on a Tuesday, both will.

Does either chain serve breakfast all day?

No. McDonald's dropped All Day Breakfast in March 2020 and has said it is not coming back nationally; Wendy's has never served breakfast outside the morning. McDonald's All Day Breakfast (October 2015–March 2020) is the reason this question still gets asked; it was suspended to simplify kitchens during COVID and franchisees voted not to restore it. Both chains sell coffee all day. The only post-cutoff exceptions at Wendy's are ad hoc — a crew finishing a last biscuit for the car already in the drive-thru line — and there are no official exceptions at McDonald's. For a morning-through-afternoon breakfast, Sonic, Whataburger (until 11:00), Dunkin' and Starbucks are the real alternatives.

Which chain is more likely to have breakfast at the store near you?

McDonald's. This is the change from 2025. Wendy's franchisees have been allowed to opt out of breakfast since February 2026, and 1,512 of 5,635 US Wendy's (26.8%) no longer serve it; the share is under 50% in Vermont, West Virginia, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Hampshire and most of New York State (see the state table). McDonald's has no comparable opt-out; breakfast is a core daypart representing roughly a quarter of its US sales, and almost every free-standing McDonald's serves it. Practically: a Wendy's whose locator page shows a 10:00 or 10:30 opening time doesn't have breakfast; a McDonald's opening after 6:00 AM is the outlier.

Wendy's is the heavier, more savoury menu; McDonald's is broader and slightly cheaper at the entry level. Wendy's 23-item lineup is built around fresh-cracked eggs, croissants, biscuits and the 730-calorie Breakfast Baconator, with the Honey Buddy Chicken Biscuit as the signature and Seasoned Potatoes instead of hash browns. McDonald's has Egg McMuffin, McGriddles, biscuits, Hotcakes, hash browns and a wider McCafé range. On value: Wendy's 2 for $3 Breakfast Biggie Bundle (Sausage Biscuit, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, Small Potatoes, Medium Coffee) versus McDonald's app deals typically in the $3–4 range; Wendy's combos run $6–9, McDonald's Egg McMuffin meal about the same. Neither chain's price is set nationally.

Wendy's coffee: a single hot medium roast plus flavoured cold brews; McDonald's: McCafé drip, lattes, mochas and iced coffees. If the coffee is the point, McDonald's has the range; if the sandwich is, Wendy's egg is cracked in-store (except the burritos) while McDonald's uses a freshly cracked egg only in the Egg McMuffin.
