Why you can't just order a burger at 9 AM

Because Wendy's runs its kitchen as two complete menus on shared equipment, switched once a day at 10:30. Three things have to happen before a Dave's Single can be made: the flat-top grill has to be cleared of sausage and egg and reset for beef; fresh (never-frozen) patties have to be pulled and tempered; and the fryer oil dedicated to potatoes has to be turned over to fries and nuggets. Crew members at a few franchises describe being told to drop fries or nuggets at 7:10 AM and to have the Frosty machine ready by 7:00 because "customer satisfaction" is the operator's rule; those are the minority, and they don't advertise it. Airport units are another place it happens. The realistic expectation anywhere else: a polite "not until 10:30."
